Prior to the Civil War, Apalachicola was the third busiest port on the Gulf of Mexico with a primary focus on cotton and the river was a busy, busy thoroughfare, but not anymore.

Today, we took an incredible 3 hour cruise up the Apalachicola River which took us deep into a marsh populated by eagles, kites, cypress and tupelo trees.  It reminded me of kayaking on Lake Umbagog in New Hampshire; there are very, very few signs of humanity.

Scattered along the river bank are a few primitive floating camps occupied by squatters who are allowed to exist off the grid, although many have television antennas.

Clearly as evidenced by the Trump sign and the Confederate flag these individuals want the government to leave them alone.
